Had Zoya ever truly trusted anybody?

She wasn’t sure. She would have said her parents, maybe. She’d trusted her mother. But with years of experience came the doubt—the questioning of whether, in a choice between Zoya and Natalya’s safety and Peter’s, her father would have chosen his daughters. As for Peter himself, she’d known even as a child that trust between them only existed as long as his purposes were also hers.

The idea of trusting a rival agent would have made her laugh in any other situation. She should take her chances on her own because there had to be another way out of this. There was always another way. Trusting him would burn every bridge she’d ever built in her life, and there was no safety net.

The code word, she thought. She’d have to signal Natalya—give her sister a chance to be gone before Peter found out what happened here.

She inhaled slowly. Held the breath. Released it. She willed her heartbeat to slow and pushed back at the adrenaline coursing through her. Never make a decision in a panic. It was something she’d learned while most girls were still playing with dolls, and it had never steered her wrong.

Then she put her hand in Connor’s.

If there was one thing she knew to be true, it was that this man wouldn’t let her die. He’d give his life for hers if he had to, but he would keep her safe.

The rest she could figure out after.

Once he’d helped her up, they brushed each other off the best they could. They still looked a little rough, but maybe less like people who’d been running for their lives. Then he pulled out his phone and she frowned.

“Who are you calling?”

He didn’t respond, probably because whoever was on the other end of the call answered. “I need a place to go to ground. Close to my location because it’s hot here. For two.”

Zoya could hear a woman’s voice through the line, but she couldn’t make out the words.

“She’s willing,” he said in response. “I won’t need containment.”

Willing? Zoya wasn’t sure that was the right word, though she kept her mouth shut. None of this was her will, but he had been the best of the options presented to her. What felt like minutes passed, during which Connor was quiet, and then a burst of talking.

“Thank you,” he said when the talking stopped, and then he slipped the phone back into his pocket. “Let’s go.”

“Where are we going?” she asked, increasingly uncomfortable with her lack of control in the situation. Her trust in him didn’t automatically extend to everybody else he worked with.

“A hotel. You’re Mrs. Taylor now. Our travel agent set up a reservation for us because we were carjacked and lost everything except the cell phone in my pocket. She’ll also be forwarding documents and purchases to us.”

Zoya was impressed. “She’s fast.”

“Charlotte’s the best.”

He looked around before they left the alley, and they both did their best to look like tourists out for a casual stroll.
